A young farm girl answers the door
One afternoon, a farmer’s daughter answered the front door and found an older neighbor standing on the porch.
“Is your father home?” the neighbor asked.
“No, sir,” the young woman replied cheerfully.
“But if you’ve come about borrowing one of our bulls, I can help you!”
The neighbor looked surprised, but she continued confidently.
“Our finest bull is a real champion. Dad charges one hundred dollars for his services.”
“That’s not what I’m here for,” the neighbor said.
“Well, we also have a younger bull who’s still learning the ropes. Dad only charges fifty dollars for him.”
The neighbor shook his head. “No, that’s not it either.”
“Oh! Then perhaps you’re interested in our old bull out in the pasture. He’s not as fast as he used to be, but he can still get the job done. Dad charges just ten dollars for him!”
The neighbor sighed and finally explained, “Young lady, I didn’t come to talk about your bulls. I came to speak with your father about your brother Elmer. He’s gotten my daughter pregnant!”
The girl’s confident smile disappeared.
She thought for a moment, then nodded seriously.
“Oh, I see! You’ll have to discuss that with my father, then. I’m afraid I don’t know what he charges for Elmer!”
The neighbor stood speechless on the porch, suddenly realizing that explaining the situation to this family might take considerably longer than he expected!
