A couple arrived at town hall

A couple arrived at town hall just seconds before closing and caught the judge as he was about to leave.

“Judge, could you please marry us?” they asked.

“Do you have a marriage license?” he asked.

“No, we don’t.”

“Then you’ll need to get one from the clerk.”

They rushed to the clerk’s office and caught him just as he was locking up.

Luckily, he agreed to issue their license.

They hurried back to the judge, who looked it over and frowned.

“You’ve put the names in the wrong places. Your name is where hers should be, and hers is where yours should be.”

Back they went to the clerk.

They got a new license and returned to the judge.

This time, the judge noticed that the date had been written in the wrong format.

So, once again, they rushed back to the clerk.

After five reissued licenses, the judge finally smiled.

“I hope you understand why I made you keep going back.

If there are mistakes on the license, your marriage might not be legally valid—and any future children could, putting it delicately, have a rather complicated legal status.”

The groom nodded and said:

“That’s funny. That’s exactly what the clerk called you!”
