The kung fu student and his master
A young Kung Fu student had been training with his master for several months, but he was becoming increasingly frustrated.
No matter how hard he tried, he kept losing during practice.
One evening, after another embarrassing defeat, the student approached his master and asked respectfully,
“Master, why does my ability never seem to improve? I train every day, but I am still defeated.”
The master sat quietly for a moment before answering.
“My young student, have you ever watched the gulls flying across the sky at sunset, their wings glowing like flames?”
“Yes, Master,” the student replied.
“And have you watched a powerful waterfall rushing over the rocks, moving around every obstacle without disturbing the world around it?”
“Yes, Master. I have seen it many times.”
“And the moon reflecting beautifully on a perfectly calm lake?”
“Yes, Master. I watch it almost every night.”
The master nodded thoughtfully.
“Then perhaps you are beginning to understand the secrets of nature.
You must observe, learn patience, and discover the balance within yourself.”
The student’s eyes lit up.
“Master, I understand! Nature is teaching me the path to becoming a great fighter!”
The master smiled.
“Exactly.”
The student bowed deeply.
“Thank you, Master. I will spend more time observing nature and searching for wisdom.”
The master stared at him for a moment.
Then he sighed.
“That,” he said, “is exactly your problem.”
The student looked confused.
The master pointed toward the training yard.
“You keep watching the birds, waterfalls, and moon instead of actually training!”
The student slowly nodded.
“So… more practice and less sightseeing?”
The master smiled.
“Now you are finally learning.”
