Two hikers were exploring the forests

Two hikers were exploring the forests of central Pennsylvania when they came across a huge hole in the ground, nearly six feet wide.

They suspected it might be an old ventilation shaft from an abandoned coal mine.

Curiosity got the better of them, and they decided to find out how deep it was.

The first hiker picked up a small rock and tossed it into the hole.

They leaned over and listened carefully, but they heard absolutely nothing.

“Must be pretty deep,” he said.

The second hiker found a much larger rock and threw that in, too.

Once again, they waited for the sound of it hitting the bottom but nothing happened.

Determined to solve the mystery, they spotted an old railroad tie nearby. Working together, they dragged it to the edge and pushed it into the hole.

A few seconds later, a dog came racing through the trees and suddenly leaped straight into the opening!

The two hikers stared at each other in disbelief, wondering why any dog would do something so crazy.

Just then, a young boy walked up and asked, “Excuse me, have either of you seen my dog?”

The hikers nervously explained what they had just witnessed.

The boy burst out laughing and shook his head.

“That couldn’t have been my dog!” he said. “My dog was tied to a railroad tie!”

The hikers looked at each other in complete silence.

Suddenly, they realized their little experiment had been far more successful than they ever intended!
