A overly confident attorney and a quiet blonde traveler
A overly confident attorney and a quiet blonde traveler found themselves seated side-by-side on a lengthy nonstop flight from Los Angeles to New York.
Shortly after takeoff, the attorney leaned over with a grin and asked if she would like to play a quick trivia game to pass the hours.
The woman was completely exhausted and simply wanted to catch a quiet nap before landing.
She politely declined the offer, pulled a soft travel blanket over her shoulders, and turned toward the window to catch a few winks.
However, the attorney was persistent and kept pushing, insisting that the game was super simple, incredibly entertaining, and a great way to stay sharp.
He explained the basic rules: “I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the correct answer, you pay me $5. Then you ask me a question, and if I don’t know the answer, I pay you $5.”
Once again, she politely shook her head no, adjusted her neck pillow, and tried to fall fast asleep.
Assuming he could easily win every single round against his quiet neighbor, the attorney decided to sweeten the pot to convince her: “Okay, look, let’s make it much more interesting! If you don’t know the answer, you pay me just $5. But if I can’t answer your question, I will pay you a whopping $500!”
This generous offer caught her attention. Realizing that this persistent neighbor was never going to leave her in peace unless she participated, she finally nodded and agreed to play one round.
The attorney immediately asked the very first question: “What is the exact average distance from the surface of the Earth all the way to the Moon?”
Without saying a single word, the woman reached calmly into her handbag, pulled out a fresh five-dollar bill, and handed it directly to the confident lawyer.
Now, it was her turn to ask a question.
She looked at him calmly and asked, “What walks up a steep hill on three legs, but comes back down using four?”
The lawyer stared back at her with an intensely puzzled look on his face.
He quickly opened his top-of-the-line laptop, launched his high-speed web browser, and began frantically searching every online reference database he could find.
He connected to the airplane’s onboard Wi-Fi, combed through scientific archives, queried artificial intelligence tools, and checked digital encyclopedias.
Growing increasingly frustrated, he sent urgent messages to his colleagues, group chats, and smartest friends. Nobody had ever heard of such a thing, and all his research came up completely empty.
After over an hour of relentless, frantic searching, he finally ran out of options and gave up. He gently tapped the sleeping woman on the shoulder and handed her a crisp $500 bill.
She politely took the $500 cash, tucked it safely inside her wallet, and turned right back toward the window to resume her nap.
The lawyer, who was now thoroughly confused and deeply frustrated, tapped her on the shoulder once more and asked, “Wait a minute, you have to tell me—what actually goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?”
Without saying a single word, the woman reached right back into her handbag, handed the lawyer a $5 bill, and went straight back to sleep.
