The moose hunters and the brave pilot
A bush pilot dropped two hunters, Bob and Ted, at a remote lake in Northern Ontario for a week-long hunting trip.
Before leaving, the pilot gave them one important warning.
“I’ll be back next Saturday,” he said. “But remember, my plane can safely carry only one moose along with your gear.”
The hunters nodded.
A week later, the pilot returned and found that Bob and Ted had done surprisingly well.
They had two moose waiting beside the lake.
The pilot stared at them.
“I told you I could only carry one!”
Ted shrugged.
“Last year, another pilot picked us up with two moose.”
Bob nodded confidently.
“Maybe that pilot was a little more adventurous than you.”
The pilot didn’t want to admit defeat.
“Fine,” he said. “Let’s give it a try.”
They loaded the gear and both moose onto the plane. The pilot started the engine and raced across the lake.
The plane gathered speed.
The trees at the end of the lake seemed to be getting closer by the second.
“Faster!” Ted shouted.
“I’m trying!” the pilot yelled.
At the very last moment, the plane lifted into the air.
Unfortunately, one wing clipped the top of a tree.
The plane spun around and crashed into the forest.
After a while, Ted opened his eyes and looked around.
He eventually found Bob nearby and helped him sit up.
Bob groaned and asked, “Do you have any idea where we are?”
Ted looked around at the broken plane and scattered camping gear.
He thought for a moment.
Then he smiled.
“Yep.”
Bob waited.
Ted pointed toward the lake.
“I’d say we’re about 200 yards farther than where we crashed last year!”
Bob stared at him.
“So we’re improving?”
Ted nodded.
“Absolutely. At this rate, we might make it home in another twenty years!”
