When I first met my wife
When I first met my wife, I wanted our first date to be something unforgettable.
I figured coffee and dinner were far too ordinary, so I suggested visiting a local bee farm to help move some bees into a new hive.
She agreed, and I thought I had come up with the most original date idea ever.
When we arrived, the beekeeper handed me protective equipment and explained my special assignment.
“Your job is to collect any bees that refuse to move into their new home,” he said.
I nodded confidently, even though I had a secret fear of getting stung.
The beekeeper gently smoked the hive, encouraging the bees to move.
Most of them cooperated, but a few stubborn little fellows refused to leave.
“Just pick them up carefully and move them over,” the beekeeper instructed.
Before I could change my mind, I reached out and scooped up a handful of buzzing bees.
My heart was racing, my palms were sweating, and I was beginning to question my romantic planning skills.
Then I looked up and saw her.
Sunlight shone through her hair, and she smiled at me so warmly that, for a moment, I forgot I was holding a handful of insects capable of ruining my entire afternoon.
I was completely mesmerized.
Meanwhile, the beekeeper noticed that I had stopped moving.
“Hey! The new hive is over here!” he shouted, carefully guiding my hands in the right direction.
Thankfully, the bees made it safely to their new home, and I survived my unusual first date.
Years later, my wife still asks me why I chose a bee farm for our first outing.
I always give her the same answer:
“Because that was the day I realized I had found the woman of my dreams.”
She smiles and asks, “And what did you learn about love?”
I take her hand and deliver my favorite line:
“That beauty is truly in the eyes of the bee holder!”
And honestly, after all these years, I still think it was the sweetest first date I could have planned though next time, I might choose a cafe with fewer flying surprises!
